Yellowsplus – A Short History of Japanese Eyewear

YELLOWS PLUS – A SHORT HISTORY OF JAPANESE EYEWEAR

Japanese manufacturers are famous for their high-quality products and Japan’s eyewear industry is no exception. It is the combination of high-quality materials and detailed craftsmanship that makes Japan made eyewear so exceptional.

Since 1905, Japanese eyewear has been made in the neighbouring cities of Sabae and Fukui, located in the Fukui prefecture on the west coast of Japan’s biggest island, Honshu.

At the beginning of 1900, the Fukui prefecture was mainly a collection of poor farming villages cut off from the rest of the country which disappeared under a thick blanket of snow for most of the winter. Masunaga Gozaemon, a local politician at that time started the first eyewear manufacturing facility as a means of improving the economy of the people. Quality was the goal from the outset and the first pair of glasses made in Fukui were donated to the Emperor!

Since those early days the eyewear industry in Japan has been hugely successful having pioneered many unique and detailed skills in the production of high quality optical frames. Today Japan is the world’s leading provider of luxury eyewear that is lightweight, durable and beautifully engineered.

YELLOWS PLUS LATEST ARRIVALS

Our favourite Japanese designer Toshiaki Yamagishi makes his eyewear in Fukui and we’re delighted to introduce this latest collection. Featuring finely milled titanium and cellulose acetate, with a serene colour palette, these beautiful frames are as functional as they are design savy. All of the hardware (screws, rivets and hinges) are titanium, ensuring parts do not corrode over time. Frames made in Japan do not include any nickel making them hypoallergenic.
